Always consider the amount of risk you’ve allowed into the project by asking these questions:

■ Are there adequate resources to complete the project?

■ Are the time estimations accurate?

■ Are there too many concurrent tasks?

■ Are resources spread too thin?

■ Is this a proven plan?

■ Is the plan realistic?

Although all operations processes are similar... they do differ in a number of ways. Four of which are listed below:

  • The volume of their output;
  • The variety of their output;
  • The variation in the demand for their output;
  • The degree of visibility which customers have of the production of their output.

All four have implications for the cost of creating the products or services.

CAG Explains - How do customers define product quality?

Dr. David A Garvin (1984) defines eight dimensions of quality or quality characteristics which the customer looks for in a product:

  • Performance
  • Features Reliability
  • Conformance
  • Durability
  • Serviceability
  • Aesthetics
  • Other perceptions

The customers use these dimensions to form their judgement of quality. The customer will trade-off these quality characteristics against the cost of the product in order to get a value for money product.

Changing processes is difficult and expensive… In some cases, the change may mean starting over.

4 rules to follow when analyzing and designing processes:

  • Is the process designed to achieve competitive advantage in terms of differentiation, response, or low cost?
  • Does the process eliminate steps that do not add value?
  • Does the process maximize customer value as perceived by the customer?
  • Will the process win orders?

  • Sales gains ... by improving response, price flexibility, increasing market share, improving reputation
  • Reducing costs... by increasing productivity, lowering rework and/or warranty costs
